A Note from Dr. Vazquez:

Welcome,

Culture and its mores, values, customs, and ethnicity shape how we view the world, handle problems, and relate to each other.  Those who are raised in more than one culture not only have to cope with the adjustments and problems everyone else faces.  They also have to resolve conflicts arising from differences between cultures.

As an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, who moved to the United States at the age of 16, I have lived in the U.S. much longer than in Latin America.  Yet I have never lost touch with my roots and the richness of my heritage.  I visit my homeland and other Latin American countries.  I brought up my two sons to be proud of our culture.

As a clinical psychologist, I dedicate my clinical work, research, teaching, and writing to helping people cope with the challenges of multicultural living.  I am Founder and Director of the Institute for Multicultural Behavioral Health at Bellevue Hospital, Founder and former Director of the Bilingual Treatment Program Clinic at Bellevue Hospital, and former Director of the New York University-Bellevue Clinical Psychology Internship Program in multi-ethnic New York City.  I enthusiastically supervise and teach from what I have learned in over 25 years as a clinician and a researcher.

My first book, The Maria Paradox,  helps Latinas overcome culturally imposed limits on women, passivity, and abusive relationships to enhance their self-esteem and sexual fulfillment.  My latest book, Parenting with Pride: Latino Style, shows parents how to transmit cultural values proudly to their children.  It is available in hard cover and paperback.

Through my private practice in New York City, my books, speaking engagements, and this web site, I want to help you and those you care about understand, cope with, and be proud of a multicultural heritage. Although I have a special niche helping Latinos, I also have training and many years of experience working with a non-Latino population from many different cultures, who are immigrants or born in the United States.  Let me know whenever I can help.
